I've seen VMware engineering use this method to recover vCenter in a similar situation. While walls, borders and camps give an impossible-to-miss materiality to the undesirability of certain populations such as refugees and immigrants, undesirability can also take the form of discriminatory policies, discourses, micro-agressions, displaced jokes, or invisibilisation. This will provide much improved recovery capability.Īnother way to recover (if the Standard Switch route is not an option in a DR situation), is to login to the ESXi host containing the vCenter VM, then using esxcli, disconnect a VM on the same Port Group from the distributed switch, then reconnect vCenter to the now available port to bring it back up. Configure vCenter to be on the same VLAN as the host, and connect it to the Standard Switch. Create a Standard Switch with 2 dedicated uplinks on each ESXi host. In a DR or Restore situation, you can then use the Ephemeral Port Group for recovery.ģ. Create an Ephemeral Port Group for recovery on your Distributed switch, and configure it with the same VLAN vCenter normally uses. Use affinity rules to pin vCenter to known hosts (eg Hosts #1 #2 and #3) then you always know where to find it.Ģ. What the error actually means is that vCenter cannot be assigned a port on the Distributed Switch as vCenter itself needs to be running in order to manage the assignment (Hence Chicken and Egg 101). This is a quick 20 minute solution but if you don’t know it, you can spend hours trying to get your Vcentre on the correct VLAN again.

  • After the VM network adapter has been correctly re-configured with the Distributed switch, the Standard switch can be removed and the vmNIC added back to the Distributed switch.
  • As soon as the Vcentre is able to communicate with the hosts on the required/correct VLAN, you can configure the VM network Adapter to the required/correct VLAN.
  • Start the Vcentre Server up and confirm the NIC is correctly configured in the OS.
  • Once the Standard Network Switch is created, it will appear in the Network adapter drop down list in the VM properties, Configure the Vcentre server to use the standard switch.
  • Use the disconnected vmNIC to create a standard network switch on the required/correct VLAN.
  • On the VM Host hosting the Vcentre server, disconnect one of the vmNICs from the Distributed switch.
  • Solution: In order to get the Vcentre server back on to the required/correct VLAN, the following needs to be done: It means that the Vcentre is on a VLAN that is not connected to the Distributed Switch and cannot be changed.

If upon save the Vmware client gives you an error "Addition or reconfiguration of network adapters attached to non-ephemeral distributed virtual port groups (#) is not supported".Shutdown the Vcentre VM and try change the VLAN of the server to the required/correct VLAN, click save.Examine the Network settings and find the VLAN to be set to the incorrect VLAN.Right Click on Vcentre VM and click Edit settings.Determine which host the Vcentre Server was running on. Log into the hosts with the Vmware client and the root password. Problem: Unfortunately, you cannot just add the correct VLAN to the Vcentre server because the VCentre has no way of communicating with the distributed switch which does the work.

Impact: HA, DRS will stop working and the Distributed switch management will no longer be possible, because these functions are managed by the Vcenter server, Hosts will remain running and so will the Virtual Machines on them.

Scenario: Should it happen that the VLAN of the Vcentre Server is changed accidentally to an isolated VLAN, the Vcentre server will lose all comms with the VM hosts. We recently had an interesting catch 22 situation within VMWare and I thought it be best if I share the solution in case someone, somehow ends up in a similar situation.
